Former Site of the Baiyunlou Battle

The former site of the Baiyunlou Battle is a cultural relic protection unit of Heping County and a classic red tourism destination.

Baiyunlou is located in Panshi Village, Dahuh Town, Heping County. During the Liberation War, it was the residence of the three brothers Zeng Qirui, local landlords of Panshi Township, Dahuh District. The building stands about 3 kilometers northwest of the Dahuh market town and covers an area of approximately 2,500 square meters.

In March 1948, after the Nationalist forces deployed heavy troops to suppress Dahuh, the Heping County government of the Nationalist Party stationed nearly 100 men there—Xie Yuechen led the county police team, while Wu Guifang commanded a joint defense unit. Relying on Baiyunlou’s strategic location, solid structure, and superior weaponry, they stubbornly resisted the people and posed a serious threat to the local armed forces in the Jiulian and Dahuh regions.

In mid-January 1949, following instructions from the Jiulian District Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Lianhe County People’s Government decided to eliminate the remaining enemy forces at Baiyunlou. On the evening of January 27, Lianhe County Governor Luo Weiqiang and Deputy Governor Deng Ji assembled around 200 personnel—including the Guilin Squad and Huohua Squad of the Third Regiment of the Dongjiang Second Detachment, the guerrilla teams of Dahuh and Zhongxin Zhepi, and all members of the Lianhe County Working Committee in Dahuh—and marched through the night straight toward Baiyunlou. At dawn the next day, they surrounded the building on all sides. Fighters from each unit took up advantageous positions and aimed cannons at the six towers of Baiyunlou. Demolition squad members crouched below with explosives, ready to strike. Another unit was stationed at the mountain pass leading to the enemy's escape route to prevent their getaway. Faced with this, the defenders shut the gates tightly and dared not fire a single shot in response. That day, our side initiated psychological warfare, issuing a surrender notice to the enemy and calling out to them to explain our policies. This psychological campaign lasted several days until, on February 4, under the pressure of overwhelming political and military force, the defenders had no choice but to lay down their arms, surrendering a list of their weapons and the keys to their storage. The battle resulted in the seizure of 39 firearms, over 1,800 rounds of ammunition, and a large quantity of supplies. Xie Yuechen, who tried to flee and hide in the grass near Sijiaoling, was disarmed of three life-saving guns by our ambushed soldiers before being released. The surrender of the Baiyunlou defenders marked the final collapse of the Nationalist regime in Dahuh.

In July 2010, it was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit by the Heping County government.
