Site of the Taling Battle

The Site of the Taling Battle is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Site of the Taling Battle is located on the slopes of Taling Hill, about 500 meters southwest of Xiuduan Market in Lianping County, covering an area of approximately 10,000 square meters.

In March 11, 1948, the enemy, seeking to use Dahua as a bridgehead for their attack on Qingzhou in the Jiulian region, deployed over 200 troops from the Bao Wu Regiment under Guan Zhaosha and the Heping County Police Force, marching from Heping County toward Dahua. Around 8:00 a.m., when the enemy reached Zaoshi Gang, they were spotted by our forward sentries, who immediately sounded the alarm. Militia members in villages along the highway heard the alarm and started sounding gongs village by village. Soon, militiamen from the Dahua and Sanjiao areas rushed toward Xiuduan along the slopes on both sides of the road and quickly joined the battle.

Around 8:30 a.m., the Guilin First Company, stationed near Panshihebei and led by Zeng Kunyi and Zeng Kunyan, swiftly seized Taling Mountain. Liao Jinglian and the second squad took control of Heshanggu, while Zeng Ping and He Yang, with the first squad, occupied the main peak of Taling Mountain and prepared their defenses to confront the enemy. By this time, the enemy, who had been repelled and were retreating while fighting by the Shangling and Jinxī militia, split into two groups upon reaching the vicinity of Xiuduan Market: one group attempted to seize the main peak of Taling Mountain, while the other engaged in fierce combat with the militia and the machete team along the highway. The enemy directed heavy firepower toward the position of Liao Jinglian’s second squad on Heshanggu Mountain and tried to outflank them in an attempt to take Heshanggu. Seeing that the terrain was unfavorable, Liao Jinglian led his team to withdraw from the position and retreated to the Xiaoxi Stream at Weiwu behind the river. Meanwhile, Zeng Ping and He Yang’s first squad, occupying Taling Mountain, engaged in intense gunfire with the enemy until their ammunition ran out. He Yang and Wu Niangqing were shot and killed, and Taling Mountain fell into enemy hands. After capturing Taling Mountain, the enemy advanced toward Datian. Our troops and militia fought back fiercely, forcing the enemy to retreat. On March 30, our forces once again engaged in a fierce battle with the enemy at Taling Mountain. After repelling several waves of attacks, we safely withdrew the following day.
