Shinao Mountain Battle Site

The Shinao Mountain Battle Site is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Shinao Mountain Battle Site is located on Shinao Mountain in Minzhu Village, Xiuduan Town, Lianping County.

In the summer of 1948, the Feng Zhiqiang Company of the First Security Regiment of the Guangdong Provincial Garrison of the Kuomintang, stationed in Dahua, was a reinforced main force company with a complement of 160 troops, equipped with six machine guns and a significant number of Japanese-style rifles and automatic weapons. Most of the soldiers in this company were transferred from regular army units. After the Feng Company was stationed in Dahua, it acted recklessly and committed all kinds of atrocities, wantonly arresting and killing Communists, guerrilla fighters, and revolutionary masses, posing a great threat to the local armed forces in the Jiulian region. As a result, the Guangdong-Gan Border Detachment (referred to as the Border Detachment) decided to deliver a decisive blow to the Feng Company.

On November 9, leaders of the Border Detachment—Yan Shangmin, Zheng Qun, Wei Nanjin, and Wu Yi (formerly Zhiyun)—led seven companies: Guilin, Pearl River, Jiujiang, Yunnan, Feipeng, and Dongyue—to Chuantang, where they studied and planned the battle, deciding to employ the tactic of luring the enemy out and then encircling and annihilating them. In the early morning of the 15th, the lure was successful. Around 9 a.m., fierce fighting began. By 10 a.m., the Feng Company was surrounded and, once dominant in Dahua, had become trapped like a turtle in a jar. Our forces, the Pearl River and Guilin Companies, holding the front positions, fired from high ground, calmly repelling the enemy’s repeated assaults. After more than four hours of intense fighting, the battle reached a stalemate. Although surrounded, the Feng Company suffered relatively light casualties. Although the Border Detachment held the initiative, over half its ammunition had been used up. Yan Shangmin and Zheng Qun urgently convened relevant personnel to discuss and decided to intensify firepower across the board and rapidly tighten the encirclement. At 2 p.m., the firepower of the Feng Company suddenly intensified, with bullets raining down on the front lines of our positions. Seeing the enemy attempting a desperate breakout, and with two soldiers from the Border Detachment being shot and killed, the anger of our troops flared even more. The soldiers fought with growing ferocity, inflicting heavy casualties on the Feng Company. Seeing that the situation was hopeless, Feng Zhiqiang fled with two squads through a weak point in the encirclement. This battle killed over 40 enemies, captured more than 80, and seized five light machine guns, over 50 rifles, as well as a batch of ammunition and military supplies. Seven soldiers from the Border Detachment died heroically.

The Battle of Shinao Mountain was the first annihilation battle in the Jiulian region’s revolutionary struggle to shift from a passive to an active stance and turn the tide of the war. It had a positive impact on the liberation struggles of both the Jiulian and Dongjiang regions.

In May 2011, a monument was erected for protection by the Lianping County Committee and County Government.
