Nanyuan Ancient Village

Nanyuan Ancient Village was formerly known as Panjiawei. After the liberation, it was renamed Hongguang Village in the hope of basking in the radiance of the red sun. The name "Nanyuan Ancient Village," currently used as the name of the tourist area, was adopted later.

Nanyuan Ancient Village is under the jurisdiction of Xiantang Town, Dongyuan County, located in the northern part of Heyuan City. It is 15 kilometers from the downtown area of Heyuan and 5 kilometers from Dongyuan County seat; the village covers an area of over 15,000 mu, with a population of more than 1,800. The per capita income of the villagers is above average for the region, reaching 4,380 yuan in 2003, with business and migrant work being the main sources of income.

The main sources of income were business and working away from home.

Nanyuan Ancient Village boasts not only picturesque Hakka rural scenery but also preserves a large complex of official buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as Hakka residences with Lingnan architectural features. These precious ancient buildings, rich in historical and cultural heritage and of significant research value, have enriched Heyuan's tourism resources and strengthened the presence of Hakka culture.

Nanyuan Tourist Area is one of the most representative ancient Hakka villages in Heyuan City. It is located in Hongguang Village, Xiantang Town, Dongyuan County, adjacent to the western bank of the Dong River, 15 kilometers from downtown Heyuan. The well-preserved Hakka residential architecture and unique Hakka culture create an attractive tourist resource. The first phase of development and construction of Nanyuan Tourist Area began in

the latter part of the year and was completed by May Day (International Workers' Day) of 2004, when it opened for trial operations.

Nanyuan Tourist Area has over 30 ancient residential buildings, most of which were built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The locations of the buildings were carefully chosen based on orientation and surrounding environment, typically facing south with a northern exposure. Their characteristics include convenient materials, sturdy and reliable structures, large scale, and enclosed layouts. At the same time, Hakka architecture also reflects ideas of yin-yang philosophy and family values. Among the building complexes in Nanyuan Tourist Area, the largest and best-preserved residences are "Dafu Mansion," "New Government Office," and "Old Government Office." Most remarkably, there is the "Liuxi Academy." The former glory of the Pan family can still be vividly felt here.

The "Century Orchard" in Nanyuan Tourist Area is also a must-see attraction. Located along the beautiful Dong River, the orchard consists entirely of nearly 200-year-old lychee trees. Time has given them twisted shapes, with each tree resembling a precious potted landscape.
