Hakka Culture Museum at Wanlv Lake

The Hakka Culture Museum at Wanlv Lake was established and opened to the public in October 2006. The Hakka Culture Museum — with its name inscribed by the renowned Chinese cartoonist Hua Junwu — was designed and constructed in the distinctive arcade-style architecture unique to the Hakka people. The exhibition space spans two floors, covering a construction area of nearly 2,000 square meters, and the architectural style is entirely modeled after traditional Hakka building designs. It aims to rescue a collection of folk treasures that are gradually being lost, awaken public awareness about the preservation of Hakka cultural heritage, elevate the cultural stature of Heyuan, and continuously promote the development of Heyuan’s culture and tourism. The main content of the Hakka Culture Museum focuses on Hakka celebratory culture as its soul. Through historical images and texts from different periods, along with precious artifacts and various display techniques, it vividly presents the “Eight Joys” of the Hakka people. It also provides a detailed showcase of the historical origins, artistic culture, local customs, etiquette traditions, folk crafts, and production and daily life practices of the five major migrations of the Hakka people in Heyuan. The museum houses a collection of over 30,000 items, with more than 5,000 on display — all rare folk relics. It is currently the first museum in Guangdong Province to systematically and comprehensively exhibit Hakka culture.
