Former Site of the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee of the CCP and the “Spark Newspaper”

The former site of the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee of the CCP and the “Spark Newspaper” is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

The former site of the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (abbreviated as the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee) and the “Spark Newspaper” is located in Wenxiutang, Yongxin, Huangcun, Dongyuan County.

In February 1941, with the approval of the Provincial Committee, the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee of the CCP was established in Shuibei, Longchuan County. The committee was led by Secretary Liang Weilin, with Zhang Zhixin as head of the Organization Department, Rao Huangxiang as head of the Propaganda Department, and Li Hanxing (also known as Zhang Rihuo) as head of the Youth Department, and Li Jingfen (later replaced by Xu Ying) as the head of the Women’s Section. It was directly under the leadership of the Northern Guangdong Provincial Committee and governed counties including Zijin, Wuhua, Longchuan, Heyuan, Heping, Lianping, and Xinfeng, as well as the western part of Xingning. In March 1942, after careful consideration, the committee leadership concluded that the Huangcun area of Heyuan County had a solid party organization and mass base, was situated at the junction of Zijin, Wuhua, Longchuan, and Heyuan counties, and featured high mountains and dense forests—making it suitable for guerrilla warfare. As a result, the committee headquarters was relocated from Shuibei, Longchuan to Wenxiutang, Huangcun. In February 1945, during the first meeting to resume organizational activities, the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee decided to establish the “Spark Newspaper” here.

This historical site was built during the Republican era. It faces south and consists of a traditional residential building with two halls, two wing rooms, and a front courtyard. The structure is square-shaped, with a total width of 21.5 meters and depth of 24.1 meters, covering a construction area of 518.15 square meters. It features a flush gable roof with clay tiles, red brick walls, wooden framework, and two stories. The door frame and door jambs are made of granite. On the lintel above the main gate of the lower hall, there are granite plaques inscribed with “Fengmen Tower,” “Former Site of the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee of the CCP,” “Former Site of the Spark Newspaper Office,” and “Former Site of the Rear Dongjiang Special Committee Party Training Class.”

In June 2011, it was designated as a Patriotic Education Base by the Heyuan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government.
