Daping Battle Site

The Daping Battle Site is a classic destination for red tourism.

The Daping Battle Site is located in Daping, Luohu Town, Dongyuan County.

In December 1948, after more than 3,000 troops of the Nationalist Party's Guangdong Provincial Security Regiment No. 13—fully equipped with American gear—occupied Lan Kou and Zengtian Market Towns, they became arrogant and overbearing. They planned to send forces to attack Luohu in an attempt to open the way to Dengta and cut off access to our Hexi base area in Luohu, as well as prepare for attacks on Zhangxi and Shangwan. After the Jiulian District Committee and leaders of the Guangdong People’s Liberation Army’s Yuegan Border Detachment—Yan Shangming, Zheng Qun, Wei Nanjin, and Zhong Junxian—ascertained that the enemy was about to launch an offensive, they decided to engage in a decisive battle here. On December 22, the detachment headquarters ordered the Fourth Regiment and the River Defense Brigade to set up defenses and fortifications near Zengtian and to strengthen surveillance of enemy movements. The Zhujiang Squad, Yunnan Squad, and Jiujiang Squad under the Third Regiment of the detachment moved into Luohu, while the main force of the Seventh Regiment—the Iron Flow Squad—and nearly ten companies totaling nearly a thousand soldiers were stationed at Baica in Dengta, assigned roles such as main assault, blocking, and flanking maneuvers. On December 23, three regular enemy companies and some local defense teams set out from Zengtian Market after nightfall and arrived in Daping at midnight. At the same time, our main assault troops—the Zhujiang Squad and Yunnan Squad—reached a hillside to the left of Daping Village. However, the enemy managed to seize the high ground first. At dawn, fierce exchanges broke out with our forward positions, and they pressed down upon our Zhujiang and Yunnan Squads from their elevated position. After an intense day and night of fighting, by around 3 or 4 p.m., the battle concluded. Two enemy companies were defeated, one platoon was completely annihilated, two machine guns and over 30 rifles were captured, more than 20 enemies were killed, 16 were captured, and dozens were wounded. This battle delivered a powerful blow to the enemy’s 13th Security Regiment and greatly boosted the morale of our troops.
