The Pukan Ambush Battle Site is a classic destination on China’s red tourism trail.

The Pukan Ambush Battle Site is located in Pukan Village, Kanghe Town, Dongyuan County.

In May 1948, the Eighth Regiment of the Guangdong Security Forces of the Kuomintang, supported by two companies from the 92nd Brigade of the 69th Division of the Kuomintang regular army, the Zijin County Self-Defense Force, landlord armed groups from Zhongba, and the Longchuan County Police Battalion — a combined force of over 800 troops — launched an offensive against Huangcun using a “converging attack” and “grid occupation” strategy, approaching from four directions in an attempt to wipe out the Dongjiang People’s Anti-Conscription Corps in one fell swoop. On the 9th, one of the enemy columns attacking Huangcun via Kanghe — consisting of over 300 soldiers — advanced from the direction of Zijin, traveling along Baijiukeng and ascending the Yatao–Pukan riverbank. Over 20 local militiamen from Pukan, led by team leader Zhu Huoming and village Peasant Association head Zhu Guannan, utilized the advantageous terrain to engage the enemy in a three-day-and-three-night defensive battle. This action successfully pinned down the enemy forces and bought precious time for the relocation of the Dongjiang People’s Anti-Conscription Corps, which was stationed in Huangcun. During the battle, four enemy soldiers were killed and over 30 injured. Seven militiamen, including militia team leader Zhu Huoming, Peasant Association head Zhu Guannan, and a 60-year-old comrade named Zhu Huowen, sacrificed their lives heroically.
