Lianfeng Flower Calyx Tower

The Lianfeng Flower Calyx Tower is a national key cultural relics protection unit.

The Flower Calyx Tower is located in Lianfeng Village, Dadong Town, Dabu County, approximately 45 kilometers from the county seat. Built in the 36th year of the Wanli era during the Ming Dynasty (1608 AD), it has a history of nearly 400 years and is a provincial-level cultural heritage site. Covering a total area of 2,300 square meters with a built-up area of 2,286 square meters, it is a round earthen structure.

It consists of three concentric rings: the inner ring has one floor with 30 rooms, the middle ring has two floors with 60 rooms, and the outer ring has three floors with 120 rooms, totaling 210 rooms. The tower is 11.9 meters high, with walls made of rammed earth — the bottom layer is 2 meters wide, tapering to 1.3 meters at the top. The roof is supported by wooden beams and covered with gray tiles. The first floor has no windows, while the second and third floors have small triangular gun holes that are narrow inside and wider outside. The entire tower has only one main gate for entry and exit. The gate frame is made of thick, wide granite slabs, and the gate itself is reinforced with thick iron plates. These window and door features were specially designed to defend against external intrusions.

Inside the tower is a circular courtyard with an area of 283.4 square meters, paved with pebbles of varying sizes. At its center is an ancient coin design with a diameter of 3 meters, symbolizing people’s wish for abundant food and clothing. There is also an ancient well on one side of the courtyard, used for fire prevention and daily water needs. The tower also houses common facilities such as a rice huller and a pestle. The entire earthen building is well laid out, with good ventilation and lighting, and remains warm in winter and cool in summer. Today, over ten households of the Lin family still live in the tower.

On July 17, 2002, it was included in the fourth batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Heritage Sites.

On October 7, 2019, the Lianfeng Flower Calyx Tower was added to the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
