Sanhe Dam

Sanhe Dam is a classic red tourism destination.

The Sanhe Dam Tourist Area is located in Sanhe Town, an ancient town in Dabu. Sanhe Town is where the Ting River, Mei River, and Haitan River converge to form the Han River within Dabu County, hence the name "Sanhe Dam." Since ancient times, Sanhe Dam has been a vital waterway hub in eastern Guangdong and a strategic military location. For instance, in the 42nd year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1563), the Sanhe Command Fortress was built and garrisoned by government troops. In the 7th year of the Republic of China (1918), Dr. Sun Yat-sen personally visited Sanhe Dam to commend the stationed troops. On October 1, 1927, the famous Battle of Sanhe Dam during the Nanchang Uprising (also known as the "August 1st" Uprising) took place here.

Ascending to the top of Bizhi Mountain, the Monument to the Martyrs of the Sanhe Dam Battle of the "August 1st" Nanchang Uprising Army comes into view. This mountain overlooks the river from a high vantage point, featuring perilous terrain that is easy to defend but hard to attack. Covering a total area of 180,000 square meters, controlling Bizhi Mountain meant controlling the traffic on the Han River. Traveling north along the Ting River leads to Changting and Shanghang in Fujian; sailing westward along the Mei River reaches southern Jiangxi; heading east along the Meitan River takes you to Jiufeng and other areas in southern Fujian; and going downstream along the Han River leads straight to Chaozhou and Shantou. Historically referred to as “a gateway to both Guangdong regions in the west and both capitals in the north,” one might ask—how important is Bizhi Mountain’s location? The Battle of Sanhe Dam of the "August 1st" Uprising Army was fiercely fought on this mountain. To commemorate the revolutionary martyrs’ great achievements and those who sacrificed their lives in this battle, the People's Government of Guangdong Province funded the construction of a monument in December 1963. The monument stands 15 meters tall and was built using 343 pieces of fine-grained granite in 35 different specifications. The front of the monument bears the handwritten inscription by [Comrade - ]: “Monument to the Martyrs of the Sanhe Dam Battle of the 'August 1st' Nanchang Uprising Army.” The base of the monument features an inscription written by Zhou Shidi, commander of the 25th Division. Today, the Monument to the Martyrs of the Sanhe Dam Battle of the "August 1st" Nanchang Uprising Army has been designated as a key national-level protected revolutionary martyr memorial site, a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit, and serves as a base for patriotic and revolutionary tradition education in Meizhou City and Dabu County.
