The Dieye Building

The Dieye Building is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

The Dieye Building is located in Jiaokeng Village, Qingxi Town, Dabu County, Guangdong Province. It faces southwest and measures 13.8 meters in length, 11.5 meters in width, and 6.8 meters in height over two floors, with a total floor area of 135.7 square meters. Constructed from earth and wood with ten rooms and two halls, it was built in 1943.

The building is surrounded by residences on all sides, making the space quite confined, yet its design is remarkably ingenious. While inheriting the architectural style of traditional Hakka dwellings, it also introduces innovative elements. The main structure consists of two rooms and one hall, divided into front and rear sections. The front has a central hall flanked by one wing room on each side, while the rear contains three rooms. The ground floor features stone pillars, while the second floor has wooden ones. The beams and brackets are carved with floral patterns, and the window lintels around the house are molded with grey plaster to resemble bundled bamboo blinds—both rainproof and aesthetically fresh. The overall layout is rational, filled with sunlight, and very comfortable. A distinct diagonal hollow on the mountainside behind the house resembles a soldier’s Sam Browne belt.

The Dieye Building was the former residence of Wu Qiw ei and has a total of 10 rooms.

Wu Qiwei (1890–1953), courtesy name Qingyun and art name Wusheng, was from Mikeng Village, Huliao Town, Dabu County. He graduated from the sixth class of the Baoding Military Academy and served as Commander-in-Chief of the Ninth War Zone of the Nationalist Government and Governor of Hunan Province. A renowned anti-Japanese general, he held the rank of lieutenant general. In May 1949, he led his troops in an uprising in eastern Guangdong and later became a member of the First National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Guangdong Provincial People's Government.

The Dieye Building was designated as a cultural heritage site protected at the county level in Dabu in April 2005.
