Jiangdong Xiaozhu

Jiangdong Xiaozhu is a cultural relic protection unit of Meizhou City.

Jiangdong Xiaozhu was the former residence of Luo Zhuoying, Governor of Guangdong Province during the Republic of China era, and is located at the entrance of Lingxia Village, Huliao Town, Dabu County, Guangdong Province. It is a typical Hakka enclosed roundhouse, with an overall depth of 34.2 meters, a width of

41 meters, covering a land area of 1,402 square meters and a built-up area of 1,091 square meters.

"Jiangdong Xiaozhu" is the name of the outer gate tower. Upon entering the main gate, there is an outer courtyard, and the outer gate faces south from the north. The main building is called the “Xiaoting Ancestral Hall,” facing west and backed by mountains while overlooking water, with the scenic Meitan River in front. The structure is built of brick and wood, grand in scale and imposing in presence. Its layout is rational, symmetrical left and right, higher in the back and lower in the front, with a clear hierarchy and orderly arrangement. It consists of upper and lower halls, and the middle wing rooms also have inner and outer courtyards. The beams and brackets inside the house are carved with patterns of dragons, lions, flowers, and birds, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. The center and ends of the roof ridge are decorated with plaster carvings of carp holding plants, which are quite beautiful. The gate walls are adorned with numerous ancient-style, elegant murals and colored paintings.

On March 13, 2020, the People's Government of Meizhou City announced Jiangdong Xiaozhu as a Cultural Relic Protection Unit in the seventh batch of Meizhou City.

Luo Zhuoying (1896–1961), courtesy name Youqing, was a Nationalist Army General. He was born on March 19, 1896, in Baihou Town, Dabu County, Guangdong Province. At age 7, he began studying at a local school, graduated from the county’s official school in 1914, and entered Dabu Middle School the following year. In 1922, he graduated from the Artillery Department of the 8th Class of the Baoding Military Academy. Early in his career, he participated in the Eastern Expedition and the Northern Expedition, rising from a junior officer to Commander of the 11th Division and then Commander of the 18th Army, actively engaging in the campaign against the Communists in Jiangxi. Huliao Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Dabu County. It is the seat of the county government and a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese. According to cultural relics research, the town center was originally a lake. In ancient times, some people built huts by the lake for living, hence the name Huliao (which also reflects the local spirit of treating both indigenous people and outsiders equally and harmoniously, hence also known as "Tongren" or "People Together"). Both the Yizhao and Wanchuan County governments were once located in Huliao Village (now Gucheng Village). Before the Qing Dynasty, it was called Tongren She, and during the Republic of China period, it was established as Tongren District. In 1949, it became Huliao District, later changed to township and commune. In the spring of 1961, when the county seat moved back to Huliao from Chayang, it remained as Huliao Commune.
