The Ping Shan Rice Terraces is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Ping Shan Rice Terraces Scenic Area is situated in Ping Shan Village, Dadong Town, Dabu County, Meizhou City, at the convergence of four counties across Fujian and Guangdong. It is a national-level tourist destination integrating “terraced field sightseeing, miraculous spring water tasting, visiting a general’s former home, and exploring unique vernacular architecture.” The village has deep historical roots, rich cultural resources, numerous relics, and beautiful natural ecology. It is renowned as the “Yuanyang of Guangdong” for its thousand-acre terraces, which date back to the late Yuan Dynasty and feature pristine forms and graceful lines. In 2011, Ping Shan Village was designated as a “Guangdong Provincial Ancient Village.” Meanwhile, the Ping Shan Rice Terraces were recognized as a Guangdong Provincial Rural Tourism Demonstration Base and a Provincial Photography Artists’ Creation Base. In 2015, it was named one of the “Top Ten Flower-Viewing Tourist Bases in Meizhou City.”

The Ping Shan Rice Terraces were first built in the late Yuan Dynasty and completed in the early Qing Dynasty. Legend has it that Wen Magong migrated from Ninghua Shibi Village to Ping Shan, where he cleared and cultivated terraced fields on this once-barren mountainous land. Year after year, day after day, with the perseverance of the legendary Yu the Great, he transformed the wild hills into breathtaking terraces that amazed the world. To date, the Ping Shan Rice Terraces have a history of over 600 years, covering more than 1,200 acres in total, including around 680 acres of main terraces. With slopes mostly ranging between 25 and 65 degrees, the terraces are layered along the mountainside, stretching continuously from the foot to the summit and connecting one hill to another. Some have just dozens of steps, while others comprise over a thousand. They vary in shape, with fields crisscrossing the landscape. Ancient people once referred to the terraces as “lush original fields” and “dancing Ma Gang.” Here, visitors can enjoy scenery unseen in cities, hear stories unheard in urban life, and taste delicacies not found in towns.

The Ping Shan Rice Terraces present different landscapes throughout the seasons. Every March and April is the season when rapeseed flowers are in full bloom. In May and June, the terraces host events such as the Water Release Festival and farming-themed parent-child activities. From August to September, it is the rice growing season, and by October, golden rice ears sway heavily in the wind on one side, forming an endless, hopeful terrace view, while on the other, colorful yet delicate “flowers of happiness”—Gesang flowers—bloom beautifully.

Ping Shan Village: Located in the northern part of Dadong Town, Dabu County, Meizhou City, Ping Shan Village governs 12 villager groups, with 416 registered households and a population of 1,724. The village covers a total area of 6,210.3 mu, including 1,092 mu of arable land. The annual average temperature is 25°C, and annual rainfall is about 1,400 mm, characterized by a mild climate.
