Shengcao Xiaozhu

Shengcao Xiaozhu is a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit in Meizhou City.

Shengcao Xiaozhu, a municipal-level cultural relic protection site, is located in Houbei Village, Baihou Town. Built during the Republic of China era by overseas Chinese businessman Xiao Shengcao from Singapore, it faces south and features three courtyards and two wing rooms, covering an area of 1,596 square meters. The structure consists of a central hall and symmetrically arranged west-side wing rooms, designed along a balanced central axis with symmetrical left and right sections, forming a neat and orderly layout. It includes 18 small courtyards, creating a “nine halls and eighteen courtyards” layout. Above the gatehouse is a relief carving of four large characters “Shengcao Xiaozhu” written by Shang Yanliu (a native of Panyu, Guangdong, who was the “Zhuangyuan” or top imperial scholar in the last national imperial examination held in the 30th year of the Guangxu reign in China. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he served as a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a standing committee member of the Guangdong Provincial CPPCC, and the deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Research Institute of Culture and History). Another inscription above the gate reads “Xiyans Yongcui” (West Cliff Embracing Greenery). The upper hall is inscribed with three characters “Guchang Tang” (Valley Prosperity Hall) by Lin Sen (a native of Minhou, Fujian, who served as the first president of the Senate of the Republic of China and later as the Chairman of the National Government). This is known as a “residence with two inscriptions by notable figures.”

Houbei Village: Houbei Village in Dabu County, Meizhou City, is located in the northern part of Baihou Town. The village administers 25 villager groups, with 956 registered households and a population of 3,596. It covers a total area of 5.3 square kilometers, including 1,618 mu of arable land. The village has an average annual temperature of 21°C and annual precipitation of about 1,552 mm, featuring a subtropical monsoon climate.
