Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden is located near Johannesburg in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Established in 1982, it covers an area of 300 hectares and is one of the country’s youngest national botanical gardens. It is well known for the two black eagles that inhabit the park.

Since its opening, the garden has become a popular destination for short trips among Johannesburg residents. It has been ranked the “Best Place to Get Back to Nature in Gauteng” for nine consecutive years and enjoys an outstanding reputation. The vegetation here is known as "rocky highveld grassland," consisting of grasslands, savannahs, small gorges, and dense shrubs growing along streams. There are over 600 species of plants. This diverse plant life attracts a wide variety of wildlife, including mammals and reptiles. More than 220 species of birds have been recorded, and their melodious songs can be heard at any time.

In addition to its rich and colorful vegetation, the most striking attraction of Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden is a pair of black eagles raising their young. They nest on the cliffs near a waterfall, making it the only eagle nesting site of its kind within Johannesburg.
