The film follows Maggie (played by Greta Gerwig), a New York woman who, after a string of failed relationships, decides to get pregnant through a sperm donation from a friend — only to fall for John (Ethan Hawke), a married writer, just as she’s about to inseminate herself. John unexpectedly shows up to confess his feelings while Maggie is preparing for her DIY pregnancy plan. The two have an explosive night together, after which John dumps his successful yet hysterical wife Georgina (Julianne Moore) and marries Maggie in a whirlwind romance.

After their daughter is born, John becomes consumed with his writing and the spark between him and Maggie fades. Maggie then realizes that John and Georgina are truly meant for each other, sparking thoughts of “returning” John and convincing Georgina to join her in a love-swap scheme...
