Neretva River
The Neretva River is the largest river in the eastern part of the Adriatic Basin, stretching 230 kilometers in total, with 208 kilometers within Bosnia and Herzegovina and the remaining 22 kilometers in Croatia’s Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The Neretva River basin covers an area of 1,038 square kilometers, and the river region has four hydroelectric power plants that generate electricity using dams over 15 meters high and reservoir lakes.
The Neretva River is celebrated for its natural beauty, featuring diverse and visually striking landscapes. Due to population growth and related development pressures, its freshwater ecosystems have been significantly impacted. It is one of the most precious natural resources of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, boasting abundant freshwater reserves, numerous springs, and clear rivers—making it a crucial natural treasure yet to be fully assessed and acknowledged. From the Drina River in the east to the Una River in the west, and from the Sava River in the north to the Adriatic Sea in the south, Bosnia and Herzegovina is truly a European reservoir. The Neretva River basin lies among these major rivers, making it an essential part of the freshwater drinking supply system.
