Europe’s Most Beautiful National Park – The Dreamlike Plitvice Lakes Like a Fairyland

When traveling to Croatia, the most famous attraction is undoubtedly Plitvice Lakes National Park. Whether on weekdays or holidays, the main road leading to the national park is always lined with vehicles heading there. This is the most valuable and well-known natural landscape in Croatia, not only listed as a World Heritage Site in 1979 but also among the first group of Croatian sites to be included in the list.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park area consists of 16 lakes and numerous waterfalls, hence it is also known as the Sixteen Lakes National Park. Most of the water comes from the Black River (Bijela) and the White River (Crna Rijeka), as well as underground springs. Conversely, water sometimes seeps into the limestone, becoming subterranean flow, and eventually all the water converges into the Korana River.

Within the park, the interaction between limestone and water erosion creates diverse yet harmonious geological landscapes. Additionally, the porous rock known as travertine interacts with algae, moss, and plants to form a unique yet highly sensitive ecosystem. This distinctive landscape, shaped by the interplay of water, rocks, and vegetation, has remained undisturbed and continuously evolved in its pristine state since the end of the last Ice Age tens of thousands of years ago.
