Situated on the limestone plateau between Zadar and Zagreb in Croatia, Europe, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest national park in southern Croatia and also the largest in the country. Established as a nature reserve in 1949, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Covering a total area of 296 square kilometers, the park is made up of 16 larger lakes interconnected by 92 smaller streams and dramatic waterfalls. In addition, the Plitvice Lakes National Park includes the surrounding forests, which are rich in diverse flora and fauna, where animals such as wolves and brown bears can often be spotted.
