Established in 1949, Plitvice Lakes National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site 30 years later in 1979, thereby cementing its place in world cultural history.

Plitvice Lakes National Park includes a series of beautiful lakes, caves, and waterfalls. Over thousands of years, water flowing over limestone and chalk in the park has deposited travertine barriers, forming natural dams that have created a series of stunning lakes, caves, and waterfalls. The park’s breathtaking beauty and immense charm are the result of travertine and its deposits. The formation of travertine and the subsequent rearrangement of riverbeds have led to the creation of 16 lakes, which showcase magnificent natural architectural landscapes. These lakes also play a significant role in supporting the region's ecological well-being, and are surrounded by dense forests.

The forests in the park serve as a refuge for bears, wolves, and many rare bird species, and are also home to some rare plants and animals.
