Nestled between mountains and the sea, Dubrovnik boasts stunning scenery, a mild climate, and is hailed as the “Pearl of the Adriatic” and a “City Museum.” The urban area is divided into the Old Town and the New Town. The Old Town features fortresses built between the 14th and 16th centuries, situated on a massive rock that juts out into the sea. The fortress walls are constructed from granite, five meters thick, 22 meters high, and 1,940 meters long, with a moat surrounding them. The eastern side faces the land while the western side borders the sea, and the walls are dotted with numerous bastions and watchtowers.

The town preserves intact a 14th-century pharmacy, churches, monasteries, an ancient and magnificent Rector’s Palace, and a spectacular bell tower. Along the slopes, rows of red-tiled small houses and other ancient European-style architecture are interspersed with tall hotels, creating a colorful, bead-like panorama. These historic buildings showcase Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, each distinctly unique. The streets and street lamps also reflect a medieval design, making Dubrovnik one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. At 12 noon and 6 pm every day, the town's 36 church bells ring in unison, their melodious chimes echoing within and beyond the ancient fortress. The New Town is built on a gentle coastal slope in the central area, featuring modern theaters, luxurious hotels, and other tourist facilities.

The area is dotted with islands, lush forests, crystal-clear waters, abundant sunshine, and picturesque coastlines, making it a much-coveted destination for travelers. In summer, theater troupes from all over Yugoslavia hold the annual “Dubrovnik Summer Festival,” using the ancient fortress as a natural backdrop to stage both domestic and international classical plays.
