St. James' Cathedral

St. James' Cathedral in Šibenik (1431–1535), located on the Dalmatian coast, bears witness to the extensive artistic exchange in architecture between northern Italy, Dalmatia, and Tuscany during the 15th and 16th centuries.

The construction of the cathedral was overseen successively by three architects: Francesco di Giacomo, Georgius Mathei Dalmaticus, and Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino. They invented a structure entirely made of stone and employed unique architectural techniques to build the cathedral’s vaults and domes. The form and decorative elements of the cathedral, such as the frieze adorned with 71 distinct faces of men, women, and children, showcase a successful fusion of Gothic and Renaissance art.
