Stari Grad Plain
The Stari Grad Plain is a cultural landscape located on the island of Hvar in the Adriatic Sea. It was first settled as a colony by ancient Greek Ionians from the island of Paros in the 4th century BC, and to this day, the landscape remains remarkably intact.
The initial agricultural activities carried out on this fertile plain mainly involved the cultivation of grapes and olives—an practice that has continued uninterrupted from ancient Greek times to the present. The site is also a nature reserve. The landscape is characterized by ancient stone walls and small stone-built dwellings, showcasing the geometric land division system employed by the ancient Greeks. After 24 centuries, this landscape remains preserved in its original state.
