Zagreb Cathedral

Zagreb Cathedral is located in the capital city of Croatia, Zagreb, and is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city as well as the tallest building in the country. Its spires can be seen from many parts of the city. The cathedral is predominantly built in the Gothic architectural style. It was constructed starting in 1093, but was damaged by the Tatars in 1242. By the late 15th century, with the Ottoman Empire invading Bosnia and Croatia, numerous defensive structures were built around the cathedral. Some of these fortifications still stand today, together with the cathedral, narrating the history of Zagreb.

In 1880, the cathedral was severely damaged by a major earthquake — the nave collapsed and the towers were almost completely destroyed beyond repair. The authorities decided to renovate the cathedral, with the project led by the renowned Austrian architect Hermann Bollé. The renovated Zagreb Cathedral was redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style and features two new spires, each 108 meters tall. The restored structure regained its former glory and stands even more magnificently, now regarded as a treasured architectural masterpiece.
