Hvar Island

Hvar Island is an island located in the Adriatic Sea, stretching approximately 80 kilometers from east to west, covering an area of 297.37 square kilometers. Its easternmost point is just 6 kilometers from the Croatian mainland, making it one of the most famous tourist destinations in Croatia and all of Europe.

Located at the central point of Adriatic maritime routes, Hvar serves as a key transit hub from the Adriatic turning toward Italy and then into the Mediterranean, playing a vital role in regional trade. Human habitation on the island dates back to prehistoric Neolithic times, leaving behind a unique pottery culture that marks the beginning of Hvar’s cultural heritage. In 384 BC, the ancient Greeks established the city of Pharos (now known as Stari Grad) on the island, and cultivated agriculture in the Stari Grad Plain — one of the oldest cities in Europe. This site has now been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Hvar Island enjoys a mild and pleasant Mediterranean climate, beautiful beaches, Mediterranean vegetation, and an old-world charm. With average annual sunshine exceeding 2,715 hours, it is known as the sunniest island in Europe. The island’s vast lavender fields, originally used primarily for producing aromatic oils and soaps, have become one of its most stunning landscapes and are especially popular among young people, earning the island the nickname “The Lavender Island.” Nowadays, Hvar welcomes a large number of domestic and international tourists every year for vacation and leisure, and tourism has become another pillar industry following fishing.
