Pula Arena

Pula Arena is located in the historic city center of Pula, Croatia. Construction began in 27 BC and was not completed until 68 AD. It is not only the best-preserved ancient monument in Croatia but also the world's only fully preserved Roman amphitheater with all its original structures intact, as well as one of the six ancient Roman arenas still in existence worldwide.

The outer walls of Pula Arena were built from limestone, reaching a maximum height of 29.40 meters. Since it was constructed on a slope, the seaward side is taller, featuring three levels, while the other two sides have only two levels. The arena itself is an oval, measuring 132.45 meters and 105.10 meters along its two axes, and could accommodate 23,000 spectators. There were shops selling snacks next to the seating areas. The arena had 15 entrances, and along the main axis, there was a passageway from which gladiators and wild animals were typically released to fight. Interestingly, the arena could also be covered with large sails to shield spectators from sun and rain, showcasing the ingenuity and architectural skill of its builders at the time.

Pula Arena is one of the most well-preserved ancient structures in Croatia and even Europe, holding significant historical value for the study of ancient architecture. It was originally the main venue for gladiatorial combats in ancient times and now hosts numerous cultural events such as concerts, operas, and ballet performances. It is also one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions.
