Sponza Palace

Sponza Palace is situated at the end of Stradun Street, a renowned tourist street in Dubrovnik, and ranks among the city’s most beautiful and historic palaces. Constructed between 1516 and 1522, it preserves its original architectural style and form, making it one of the few structures in the city that withstood the great earthquake of 1667. It holds significant value for the study of private palaces and most public buildings in Dubrovnik prior to the earthquake. The word "Sponza" originates from the location where the palace was built, meaning "place for collecting water," as it is said that the site was previously used for water storage before the palace’s construction.

The overall structure of Sponza Palace is a grand rectangle, with an imposing building enclosing a lovely courtyard filled with fragrant flowers and greenery, exuding a classic, elegant, and dignified atmosphere. At the front of the palace lies a large square, connected naturally to the palace by open-air arcades. Today, this historic palace serves multiple purposes, including tourism, office space (with the National Archives located on the first floor), and as a venue for festivals. It plays a central role in Dubrovnik’s annual summer festival, the “Dubrovnik Summer Festival,” which features numerous concerts, theatrical performances, and other lively events.
