Paklenica National Park

Paklenica National Park is located on the southern slopes of the Velebit mountain in Zadar, Croatia, and is one of the country’s most renowned national parks. The park attracts a large number of domestic and international visitors with its unique canyons, pristine natural environment, rich biodiversity, and excellent rock climbing spots.

Within Paklenica National Park are two major canyons—Velika Paklenica (Big Paklenica) and Mala Paklenica (Small Paklenica)—which are also the park’s biggest highlights: Velika Paklenica stretches 14 kilometers in length and is 500 to 800 meters wide, though at its narrowest point it is only 50 meters across, with towering cliffs up to 700 meters high on either side; Mala Paklenica is 12 kilometers long and 400 to 500 meters wide, narrowing to just 10 meters at its tightest spot, with 650-meter-high cliffs and picturesque scenery of clear waters and lush greenery.

In addition, the park is home to 1,000 species and subspecies of plants, many of which are rare and precious, making it one of the most valuable plant regions in Croatia, Europe, and even the world. Forests such as oak woods, oriental hornbeam forests, beech forests, black pine forests, and fern groves cover much of the park’s landscape, not only greening and beautifying the area but also providing a natural habitat for wildlife. According to statistics, Paklenica National Park hosts over 40 species of amphibians and reptiles, more than 230 species of birds, 53 species of mammals, and various other animals. The park is also a famous destination for rock climbing and is highly favored by climbing enthusiasts.
