Diocletian's Palace

Diocletian's Palace is located in a bay near the Dalmatian Coast in the city of Split, Croatia. It was built in the early 4th century AD by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. It is situated just 4 kilometers from Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia at the time, serving as the retirement residence of Diocletian after he abdicated.

After the withdrawal of the Roman Empire, Diocletian's Palace remained vacant for several centuries until the 7th century, when residents from nearby areas settled here to escape war and engaged in necessary commerce and trade. To this day, the palace still houses many restaurants, shops, and other establishments. After the Middle Ages, the palace was largely forgotten by the world. In 1764, a Scottish neoclassical architect accidentally discovered the palace and, with the help of a French artist and several draftsmen, published a paper titled "The Ruins of Diocletian's Palace," bringing it to global attention. Later, in 1782, a renowned French painter also created artwork of the palace, gradually drawing more international interest.

Diocletian's Palace is one of the most famous historical buildings in Split and one of the most important and best-preserved ancient monuments along the Adriatic Coast. It is also the most intact ancient Roman palace site preserved in the Mediterranean region, Europe, and even the world, attracting a large number of tourists every year.
