Risnjak National Park

Risnjak National Park is located in the most mountainous region of Croatia—Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, 15 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. Established in 1949, it covers an area of 63.5 square kilometers, with the highest point at 1,528 meters and the lowest at 313 meters, featuring numerous towering peaks. Like other mountains in the Dinaric Alps, the park is dominated by limestone and dolomite, showcasing karst formations such as caves, rockfalls, and sinkholes.

Although the park is not very large, it boasts a rich diversity of plant life, including both inland and coastal species, with beech and fir trees being predominant. The animal diversity is just as remarkable as the plant variety, serving as home to many mammal species such as brown bears, red deer, roe deer, chamois, wild boars, pine martens, and dormice. The park also features a significant number of bird species—a total of 114, of which 78 are nesting birds. These animals coexist harmoniously with the flora, together forming a well-balanced ecosystem.
