Jelačić Square

Jelačić Square is located in the heart of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. This square has existed since the 17th century and is named after national hero Josip Jelačić. It is known for its buildings in diverse architectural styles and is one of the most beloved squares in Zagreb.

The main highlight of Jelačić Square is the bronze statue of Jelačić, erected here in 1866. Depicted on horseback with a sword in hand, he appears heroic. He is regarded as a Croatian national hero who, in 1848, led the people to repel foreign invaders and secure Croatia’s first taste of independence, forming a unified nation. The square is surrounded by numerous government institutions, banks, and commercial office centers, making it a bustling hub. In addition to traditional European-style buildings, there are also modern high-rises, perfectly blending tradition with contemporary architecture.

Jelačić Square still retains tram lines from the former Soviet era. The trams look clean and have a large passenger capacity, becoming a beautiful sight on the square.
