Zagreb Botanical Garden

The Zagreb Botanical Garden is located in the city center of Zagreb. Established in 1889 by Professor Antun Heinz from the University of Zagreb, it covers an area of 4.7 hectares at an elevation of 120 meters above sea level and is part of the University of Zagreb.

As one of the oldest botanical gardens in Croatia, the Zagreb Botanical Garden houses over 10,000 plant species, including 1,800 that have been brought from abroad. The arboretum is the most attractive part of the garden, designed in a naturalistic landscape style, featuring trees and shrubs from around the world. The tall, sturdy trees create the feeling of walking through a lush green jungle. The garden is renowned for its diverse collection of Croatian flora and is an ideal place to admire the country’s unique plant species. Thanks to its elegant environment, the garden also attracts a variety of animals that make it their home. Visitors can spot turtles, frogs, and fish in the ponds and lakes, as well as bats, martens, hedgehogs, and dormice in the rock garden.

In addition to plants, the most captivating sight in the Zagreb Botanical Garden is its birdlife. According to statistics, there are 45 species of birds living in the garden, offering visitors the chance to observe different kinds throughout the seasons, adding endless vitality and energy to the garden.
