Stepping inside and having the ceiling of the house beneath your feet—isn’t that magical? To experience this wonder, you’ll have to visit the Upside-Down House.

The Upside-Down House is located in the small town of Szymbark in Poland’s Pomeranian Voivodeship. It was built in 2007 by Polish philanthropist Daniel Czapiewski and quickly became a famous local attraction. Starting from June 2007, the town of Szymbark began welcoming around six to seven thousand visitors every weekend, all flocking to this tiny place to see the bizarre “Upside-Down House.” The designer’s original intention was to showcase the contrast between past and present life in Poland, while also encouraging people to view the world from another perspective. Czapiewski created this upside-down house to remind people not to forget those “actions that go against humanitarianism.” The Upside-Down House is one of Poland’s most popular tourist attractions. Everything—from curtains and TVs to furniture and staircases—is flipped 180 degrees, making it feel unfamiliar. Many visitors find themselves standing on what should be the ceiling and can’t help but feel dizzy and unsteady on their feet.

Although many things in the Upside-Down House are inverted, the tables, chairs, and paintings on the walls remain upright, allowing visitors to sit on chairs and admire the artwork.
