Historic Centre of Porto

The city of Porto is built along the hillsides, offering views of the mouth of the Douro River. Its unique urban landscape has a history of a thousand years. Porto’s development has been closely tied to the sea (the Romans called it Portus, meaning port), as evidenced by the numerous and varied historical monuments throughout the city—whether it’s the cathedral with its Romanesque-style choir, the neoclassical Stock Exchange, or the typical Portuguese Manueline-style Church of Santa Clara.

The renowned Studio of António Carneiro, open to visitors every day except Mondays and public holidays, was once the workplace of António Carneiro (1872–1930), a famous painter from Porto. He created most of his works here, many of which later entered the collections of local museums. It was also in Porto that the artist established his studio (now the visitor site), where some of his oil paintings, watercolours, and pencil sketches are on display.

The Romanesque Museum of Porto is open to visitors every day except Mondays and public holidays. Behind the museum lies the Crystal Palace, which houses some early 19th-century villas in the Neo-Lusitanian style. The Romanesque Museum is well known for meticulously recreating a bourgeois villa from the 19th century. This villa holds unusual historical significance, as it was where King Dom Pedro V of Portugal resided for two months during his exile.
