Imperial Palace Castle

Attraction Introduction The Imperial Palace Castle (Hofburg) was established in the late 15th century. In 1460, during his reign, Archduke Sigmund completed the construction of the Hofburg Palace (the predecessor of the castle). Between 1754 and 1773, Empress Maria Theresa ordered the renovation of this Baroque-style palace and the restoration of Gothic walls that had been damaged by fire and earthquakes. The most striking features of the current palace are the luxurious halls made of polished marble and adorned with platinum, which house busts of members of the imperial family and three magnificent ceiling frescoes. At the southern end of the palace stands a convent, whose two Baroque gates are particularly distinctive.

A statue of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph can be found in the palace gardens. Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) met Franz Joseph in August 1853 and later became the Empress of Austria. She has always been deeply beloved by the Austrian people. In 2002, on the 165th anniversary of her birth, Austria issued a €2 coin featuring Sisi on the reverse side.
