When Austria comes to mind, does the well-known Vienna spring to your thoughts? Travelers planning a trip to Austria might want to take a detour to Innsbruck in the west. Situated in western Austria and nestled in the Alpine valley, Innsbruck is an 800-year-old ancient city surrounded by towering mountains and vast forests. This Alpine town has hosted the Olympic flame three times, including the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, as well as the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012. For skiing enthusiasts, here you can experience high-speed sledding at speeds of up to 90 km/h on the Olympic-level runs, or carve graceful arcs through falling snowflakes on the slopes. A must-do is taking the Nordkette Cable Car from the city center of Innsbruck — ascending over 2,000 meters above sea level within 20 minutes from the flatlands and feeling the invigorating chill of crisp alpine air.

After descending, stroll through the city streets, swap your hiking boots for high heels, and admire the “Golden Roof” covered with 2,657 gilded copper tiles — the shining symbol of the city. Maria-Theresien-Straße is a glamorous shopping and leisure district, where you can while away time in street-side cafés and bars. In Innsbruck, you get to embrace both city life and mountain views. If you come in December, starting on the first Sunday of the month, the traditional Christmas market of this medieval mountain town bursts into vibrant life. Alongside colorful Christmas decorations, there are various handmade crafts and lively performances. Even just strolling along the streets with the Alps as a backdrop and soaking in the rich international Christmas atmosphere will create unforgettable festive memories.
