Attraction Introduction

Austria’s renowned forest, famous worldwide thanks to Johann Strauss’s composition “Tales from the Vienna Woods.” Located in the western suburbs of the capital, Vienna. The entire forested area stretches 40 kilometers, covering vast mountainous regions. The forest boasts many cold-resistant cypresses, as well as spruces and striking blue firs. Majestic and elegant beech trees stretch tall, lush and dripping with green, nestled beside the Wulena Valley and verdant woodlands, adding immense charm to this ancient city. In the southeast lies a lowland forest of over 2,000 hectares, home to a variety of rare birds and animals. The forest contains many beautiful and tranquil small villages where, for centuries, many musicians, poets, and painters have spent long periods, producing numerous masterpieces.

The famous works of Johann Strauss, hailed as the “King of Waltz,” such as “The Blue Danube” and “Tales from the Vienna Woods,” were inspired by the lush, layered scenery along the Danube River. In August 1802, Beethoven moved to the small village of Heiligenstadt here. In the forest, the village of Hinterbrühl is home to Schubert’s former residence. By the roadside stands a dilapidated mill, and at the entrance of the village, beneath a bodhi tree by a well, there is a spring. It is said that the mill owner had a daughter named Lucy, who was very beautiful and fetched water from the well every morning with her bucket. Schubert often witnessed this scene from his residence, which later became the inspiration for his masterpiece “The Beautiful Miller’s Maid.”

Today, many villages in the forested area still retain their original appearance. Mills by the village, wells, exquisitely carved and painted wooden houses, and small taverns with lanterns hanging at their doors all evoke a poetic pastoral scene. The Vienna Woods lie on the Alpine foothills. Hiking up the forest trails to higher ground, you’re greeted by an ocean of green, where pine waves ripple in the breeze — just as described in the famous piece “Tales from the Vienna Woods”: birds chirping, streams murmuring, the wind whispering, and the air fragrant, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
