Vienna’s Café Museum: The Most Beautiful Traditional Café

Vienna is known as the city of cafés, and among them, Café Museum (Café Museum) has long been hailed as the most beautiful traditional café. When Café Museum closed at the end of 2009, it sparked widespread regret and astonishment. After reopening in October 2010, lovers of traditional café culture could once again see this historic establishment reborn in a bright new light. The new operators own five cafés in Vienna, including the renowned Luntman Café (LuntmanCafé) on the Ringstrasse. Café Museum is located in central Vienna, close to both the Ringstrasse and the popular Naschmarkt.

Opened in 1899, Café Museum is a classic Viennese café, originally dubbed the "nihilist café" (café nihilism) due to its ultra-minimalist design by interior architect Adolf Loos, who removed all decorations. The space was extremely simple. Notable cultural figures such as the famed painter Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and the heavyweight novelist Robert Musil were among its regulars from the very beginning. In the 1930s, the café added comfortable lounge chairs and compartment seating. In 2003, there was an attempt to restore its original Loos-designed appearance, but the work remained unfinished. Upon reopening, Café Museum greeted café aficionados once again with a bright, refreshed style.
