Vienna is known as the city of cafés, and among them, Café Museum has long been hailed as the most beautiful traditional café. When Café Museum closed at the end of 2009, it caused widespread regret and amazement. After reopening in October 2010, enthusiasts of traditional café culture could once again see this historic establishment shining in a bright new light. The new operators own five Vienna cafés, including the famous Luntman Café on the Ringstrasse. Café Museum is located in central Vienna, close to both the Ringstrasse and the Naschmarkt.

With a history of over a hundred years, “Café Museum” enjoys the reputation of being the “most beautiful traditional café” in coffee-loving Vienna. (Image provided by Café Museum)

Opened in 1899, Café Museum is a classic Viennese café, originally referred to as the “nihilist café” (café nihilism), due to the minimalist design by interior designer Adolf Loos, who eliminated all ornamentation, resulting in an extremely simple space. Renowned artists such as Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and the heavyweight novelist Robert Musil were among the cultural figures who became regulars from the café’s early days. In the 1930s, Café Museum added comfortable lounge chairs and compartmentalized seating. In 2003, there was an attempt to restore the original design by Loos, but it was never fully completed. After reopening, Café Museum greets café lovers once again with a bright and renewed style.
