But Austria offers more than just music. In Vienna’s city squares, bustling vendors and cultural activities thrive side by side. The country honors tradition while also breaking conventions with modern art, as best exemplified by the unconventional structure of the Hundertwasser House.

Vienna, the capital of Austria, is world-renowned as the “City of Music.” The Vienna State Opera, with its 200-year history, is hailed as the “World Opera Center.” Its famously opulent “Golden Hall” is a must-see even for non-music aficionados. Tsai Youmei, a commercial officer at the Austrian Trade Office with 20 years of experience in Austria, shares: “Austria has concert halls and opera houses all over the country, many with long histories. There are countless concerts, operas, and dance performances, with audiences segmented in great detail—even special opera programs for children that are so popular you can hardly get tickets. For many Austrians, music is a way of life. Even in front of Vienna City Hall, films or performances are screened at fixed times.”

Clashing with Tradition: The Colorful Postmodern Architecture of the Hundertwasser House

Though Austria is filled with music, it offers much more. Vienna’s Hundertwasser House (Hundertwasserhaus Wien) is definitely worth a visit. The official full name of the Hundertwasser House is “Hundertwasser’s House in Vienna.” During Austria’s postmodern era, the Vienna municipal government commissioned Friedensreich Hundertwasser—a painter without formal architectural training—to design public housing. Thus, the painter took on the role of architect. Design began in 1977, construction started in 1983, and the postmodern apartment complex was finally completed in 1986.

But what’s so special about a public housing building? Hundertwasser once described it with a single line: “Dieses Haus ist meine Seele!” (“This house is my soul!”) Many Easterners describe it as “shocking,” but to Viennese eyes, it’s endlessly charming. Its exterior is a riot of bright reds, blues, yellows, and whites, and its structure defies all “rules”—ceilings and floors are uneven, each unit has a unique shape, and windows vary in height, width, and form. Lush tree canopies sprout unexpectedly from the building’s facade, almost as if sculpted by hand, making it a quintessential example of Vienna’s modern architecture.
