Bangkok Tops Global Destination Cities Ranking; Taipei Ranks 8th in Asia-Pacific

With the peak travel season approaching, have you decided where to go? According to MasterCard Worldwide’s recently releasedGlobal Destination Cities Index, Bangkok, Thailand, has claimed the top spot, while other Asian cities in the top 10 include Singapore at No. 5 and Hong Kong at No. 9.

The most surprising trend in this year’s survey is“the dominance of Asia-Pacific cities”, with 42 Asian cities among the 132 ranked, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Notably, last year’s champion London and Bangkok were only about 1% apart in tourist arrivals, indicating nearly equal strength—equivalent to around 25,000 visitors.

The “Global Destination Cities Index” ranks cities based on the number of international visitors they received in 2013. Aside from Bangkok, the top five are London, Paris, Singapore, and New York. Additionally, among the top 10 destination cities in the Asia-Pacific region in 2013, five cities in Greater China made the list, with Taipei ranked 8th. Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou ranked 4th, 6th, 9th, and 10th, respectively.
Looking at several related ranking metrics, Bangkok topped both the global and Asia-Pacific lists for the number of international overnight visitors and their total spending. Taipei ranked 8th and 6th in the Asia-Pacific region in these two categories, respectively.
