Vienna, January 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Vienna’s tourism industry experienced its best year ever: tourist overnight stays reached13.5 million nights, a 6.3% increase over 2013, setting an all-time high.
In 2014, Vienna’s tourist overnight stays once again set a record at 13,524,000, 6.3% higher than the previous year’s figure. The total number of guests reached 6,211,000, an increase of 6.4%. Norbert Kettner, Director of the Vienna Tourist Board (Norbert Kettner), explained: “International visitors account for around 82% of all overnight stays in Vienna. This not only reflects Vienna’s ongoing appeal but also shows that our long-term strategy of systematically internationalizing and entering diverse markets is paying off.” His goal now is to increase Vienna’s overnight stays to 18 million by 2020.
In 2014, Germany once again led Vienna’s top ten markets with 2,650,000 overnight stays, followed by Austria (2,481,000, up 7%), the United States (748,000, up 14%), Italy (696,000, up 14%), and Russia (603,000, down 15%). Ranks six to ten were occupied by the United Kingdom (500,000, up 11%), Switzerland (399,000, up 4%), Spain (388,000, up 8%), France (365,000, up 4%), and Japan (300,000, down 2%). China (237,000, up 13%), South Korea (156,000, up 26%), Brazil (128,000, up 11%), and India (65,000, up 18%) also saw strong growth. From December 2013 to December 2014, Vienna’s total bed capacity increased by 2,900 (up 4.9%) to approximately 61,400, while room occupancy was around 71% (2013: 69%). In 2015, Vienna will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Ringstrasse with exciting events.
