Attraction Introduction

Zentralfriedhof is renowned for being the burial site of famous musicians such as Beethoven. It is located in the suburbs of Vienna, the capital of Austria. Established in 1784, the cemetery covers a vast area and contains over one million graves. The cemetery is divided by religion into sections including Christian, Jewish, and Islamic burial grounds.

The Central Cemetery of Honor in the middle of the site is lush with trees and has an imposing atmosphere. Many marble tombs are arranged in a crisscross pattern here, and most of Vienna’s notable musicians are buried here. Beethoven’s grave is modest in size but surrounded by open space, with his bas-relief portrait engraved on a gray marble headstone. Nearby lie the resting places of Schubert, Haydn, and the Strauss father and son. These musicians’ graves, marked by sculptures in various poses, form a uniquely artistic ensemble that has become a popular destination for visitors to pay their respects.

Over 2,000 soldiers who sacrificed their lives liberating Austria from Nazi German occupation by the Soviet Red Army in 1945 are also buried here.
