Schönbrunn Zoo

Schönbrunn Zoo, also known as Vienna Zoo, is a zoo located within the famous Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. Established by the Habsburg monarchy in 1752, it originally served as a royal menagerie and is one of the oldest zoos in the world with a long local history. On July 14, 1906, the first elephant born in the zoo was delivered. Since 1992, the zoo has been privatized and managed by Helmut Pechlaner, who is also the president of WWF Austria, overseeing the modernization of various parts of the zoo and maintaining its financial stability.

Vienna Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world that has a “Panda House.” The pandas were leased to the zoo by China in 2003 and are named Yang Yang and Long Hui. Other highlights include the “Rainforest House,” where visitors can explore an Amazon rainforest simulation, and an “Aquarium” that simulates traveling beneath the floodwaters of the Amazon River. In early 2004, the zoo also opened a new Polar World exhibit featuring Arctic animals.
