Vienna Ferris Wheel

The Vienna Ferris Wheel is located at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in Vienna's second district, Leopoldstadt, and is one of Vienna’s most popular tourist attractions as well as an iconic landmark for the area and even the entire city.

The Vienna Ferris Wheel is not the only Ferris wheel in Vienna, but it is the largest and most representative one. It was built in 1879 to celebrate the golden jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I and is one of the world’s earliest Ferris wheels. Originally standing 64.75 meters tall with 30 cabins, it suffered severe damage during World War II. After reconstruction, it was rebuilt with 15 cabins and is still in operation today.

The Vienna Ferris Wheel is one of the few historic Ferris wheels that remain in operation. With a long history, it first gained fame through the post-war film noir *The Third Man*, and later appeared in other notable movies such as James Bond’s *The Living Daylights* (1987), Max Ophüls’ *Letter from an Unknown Woman*, and Richard Linklater’s *Before Sunrise*.
