Pummerin Bell

The Pummerin Bell is located in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral. The original bell was cast in 1705, when the Viennese defeated the invasion of the Ottoman Empire and melted down captured  -  to create the bell. The first large bell hung here until April 12, 1945, when a great fire destroyed the church. After World War II, to celebrate Vienna’s liberation from Turkish rule, the fragments were collected and the bell was recast.

The Pummerin Bell has a diameter of 3.14 meters, a height of 2.94 meters, a maximum thickness of 24 centimeters, and weighs 20,130 kilograms, making it the largest bell in Austria and the third largest in Europe. The bell arrived in Vienna in 1952 and was first rung the day after its arrival. It is rung at least ten times a year to celebrate important holidays including New Year’s Day. Today, at the turn of the new year, thousands of Viennese gather in the square in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral to listen to the bell toll and celebrate the New Year together. This has now become a popular Austrian tradition.
