Around the world, many people are huge fans of Empress Elisabeth, idolizing her deeply. To fulfill the wishes of these admirers to get a closer look at the life of this beautiful empress, Austria has specially established the Museum of Empress Elisabeth. The museum is located in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna and opened to the public in 2004.

Empress Elisabeth, born Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie on December 25, 1837, in Munich, Germany, was a Bavarian duchess and princess who later became the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary as the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Tragically, she was assassinated in Geneva in 1898. What makes the museum unique is that, in addition to displaying many of Empress Elisabeth’s personal belongings, it also showcases some of her most famous portraits. The museum focuses on her personal life, particularly her aversion to court etiquette, her obsession with beauty and slimness, her passion for sports, and her love for classical poetry. Some of Empress Elisabeth’s personal items are being displayed to the public for the first time. These include a replica of the gown she wore at her pre-wedding ball, her famous portraits, her beauty secrets and jewelry from that era, her morning gowns, parasols, folding fans, and gloves.

Of particular note is the museum’s collection of a replica of the luxurious carriage she once rode in, which visitors can even step inside to experience. It also displays a plaster model of the assassin’s head.
