Vienna Theater

Vienna Theater is a historic theater built during the imperial era. Since the gentle waters of the Vienna River flow quietly by its side, it is also known as the Theater on the Vienna River. It was constructed by Emanuel Schikaneder, a well-known figure in Vienna’s theater scene. On June 13, 1801, under Schikaneder’s prologue, the theater officially opened.

Vienna Theater has been described as one of the most fully equipped and largest theaters of its time. Its golden age coincided with the flourishing of Viennese operetta. From 1945 to 1955, it temporarily replaced the Vienna State Opera, which had been destroyed by Allied bombings during World War II. In 1955, Vienna Theater was closed for safety reasons. It remained unused for several years and, in the early 1960s, there was even a threat that it might be converted into a parking lot. Fortunately, in 1962, Vienna Theater, along with other contemporary opera houses, established its own regulations, gradually regaining vitality. On the bicentenary of Mozart’s birth, the theater launched a series of Mozart operas. From this point on, under the direction of Roland Geyer, the theater became dedicated to performing operas and other classical music, gradually gaining acceptance and popularity.
