Golden Hall

The full name of the Golden Hall is the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, also known as the Golden Hall or the Vienna Philharmonic Hall. It is located at 12 Bösendorferstraße in Vienna and is one of the city’s—and the world’s—most renowned concert halls. The Golden Hall is celebrated as one of the world's top five concert halls, alongside the Berlin Philharmonie, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and the Boston Symphony Hall.

The Golden Hall is not a standalone building but part of the Musikverein building. This complex houses multiple concert halls, including the Golden Hall, as well as performance venues such as the Brahms Hall and Mozart Hall, in addition to offices. The Golden Hall measures 48.80 meters in length, 19.10 meters in width, and 17.75 meters in height. It is a cornerstone of Vienna’s musical life and the permanent performance venue of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The Vienna New Year’s Concert is traditionally held here, and every year, the hall’s magnificent gilded interior is broadcast to millions via television. When the hall was constructed, the concept of “acoustics” was not yet emphasized, but the architects’ pioneering insights into resonance and sound transmission led to ingenious design features. These include a hollowed-out space beneath the elevated wooden floor, carefully calculated divisions of the balcony boxes, the arrangement of the caryatid columns on the walls, and the use of static-electricity-resistant materials for the ceiling and walls—all ensuring that audiences, no matter where they sit, enjoy a uniformly high-quality musical experience.

The Austrian Royal Music Society houses a rich collection of invaluable musical treasures in the Golden Hall, including historical artifacts, manuscripts, sheet music, and instruments.
