Kärntner Straße

Location: This most famous pedestrian zone in Vienna is located in the city’s first district, right in the city center. Due to its unique U-shape and its one-of-a-kind location in Vienna, it is also known as the Golden U.

Transportation: Subway stops for Lines 1, 2, and 4 are located at the entrances of Kärntner Straße. A subway stop for Line 1 can be found at Stephansplatz, situated between Kärntner Straße and Goethegasse. In addition, there are taxi stands in front of the opera house, next to Stephansplatz, and within Michaelerplatz.

Business: With 53,400 square meters of shopping space, this pedestrian zone is Austria’s most economically significant commercial area. This shopping street, with an annual turnover of 4 billion euros, is also unmatched by any other city in Austria.

Features: At the entrance of Kärntner Straße stands the world-famous Vienna State Opera, while the central area is home to Vienna’s most important cathedral, St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The pedestrian zone ends at Michaelerplatz and the Michaeler Gate, which leads to the Hofburg Palace in Vienna.
